Public Demand Signals for Indie Developers · Monthly

Building solo and not sure where to start?
Check public demand with posted budgets before guessing

Writing code isn't the hardest part — the hardest part is spending months on something nobody wants. Idea Miner distills recurring common demands from public outsourcing tasks with posted budgets, tracking mention frequency, median posted budget, and trends to help developers discover potential software opportunities (note: posted budgets do not equal completed transactions or payments).

This period's board is sourced from: freelancer. The data reflects that platform's public outsourcing demand, not the entire software market; posted budgets are not verified transactions, and the platform's user base, collection scope, and deduplication method can all affect the results.

A Real Test of Three Synthetic PDFs: Where the Default Configuration Fails

Clean single-page tables: pdfplumber and pymupdf extract them perfectly in ~65ms -- off-the-shelf libraries already clear a high bar for this specific slice.
Cross-page tables: none of the libraries stitch pages automatically. camelot's lattice mode got all 276 cells right; pdfplumber/pymupdf each truncated 11 cells, traced to the test document's own too-narrow column, not a general few-point overflow.
Scanned tables: text-based libraries return nothing; adding OCR got 22/24 cells right but took 4.44s -- markedly slower, on a different input than the digital-text cases.

Physical Business Verification: What the Public Postings Show, and What Three Technical Checks Don't Prove

Confirmis's own website claims 6,000+ trained verifiers already exist -- directly contradicting an earlier draft's 'no standing network' assumption, which has since been corrected.
Three passive technical checks (geocoding, EXIF GPS, image tamper detection) each have real, testable limits -- including one confirmed directly: forging GPS coordinates with a free command-line tool took under half a second and completely fooled the location check.
None of the three checks tested, alone or combined, supports a 'fraud-resistant' product claim.
